Fundraiser for troops at Black Bull

NORTHAMPTON - Fun for our Troops, a nonprofit organization aiding in stress relief and relaxation for military troops, is holding a fund raiser at 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Black Bull Restaurant, 1470 Buck Road, in the Holland section of Northampton.The event will feature a DJ, drink specials and raffles. The event is for those 21 years of age or older. A $5 charitable donation is required to get in, military personnel with a valid military ID will be able to enter for $1. Praise the Lord and the pass the joystick!

The non-profit Fun for Our Troops campaign has a simple mission: Equip U.S. soldiers with video games.

The group is raising money to outfit U.S. troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan with games and consoles of all flavours. Console wars be damned—the troops will be happy with Wiis, Xbox 360s, PlayStation 3s.

Dana Blackman Brady, the wife of a former U.S. Army Ranger, explains the drive to the Bucks County Courier Times:

“What (the troops) really appreciate over there are the true comforts of home. The stress relief and the escapism involved in these games, we really think could be beneficial.

“We’re hoping to get (video games) throughout the year. We don’t want to have (soldiers) wait. We do foresee the issues with Christmas. It’s going to be a crunch for those games.”

Accord to its website, the group has so far collected $1,755. One good Samaritan has already offered to foot the postage.

Video game sales are way up [among soldiers]… In a converted Iraqi Republican Guard barracks, Sergeant David Carr and several of his buddies are huddled around a hard-to-find Nintendo Wii.

“We play it when we get off of work almost every night,” Carr says… At the moment however, Carr isn’t playing a shoot-em-up game. Right now he’s got something a little more relaxing, “Hooked! Real Motion Fishing.”

From what we’ve heard, the biggest headache for soldiers serving in Iraq (besides, you know, the constant threat of bodily harm) is the boredom. One soldier’s wife, unwilling to let her husband go without entertainment, has mounted an effort to get games to those like her husband. That, friends, is real love. The group is called “Fun For Our Troops,” and it’s trying to raise cash to purchase games for soldiers abroad.

While a lot of us are safe at home playing Call of Duty 4 on our game consoles, a sizable portion of the US military is overseas right now living it - but that doesn’t mean they aren’t gamers. There are tons of video game addicts in the military, and now there’s an organization dedicated to getting them their fix. Created by military wife Stephanie Doctor Shea, whose own husband was just redeployed to Iraq, Games For Fun is an organization that plans on raising money to supply our troops with video game goodness. She and partner Dana Blackman Brady believe that the comfort of video games will do our forces a world of good.

Stefanie Doctor Shea is first to admit that it seems a bit “juvenile,” but she can’t help herself.

Seeing grown men hunkered down over a handheld game controller, fingers racing frantically to throw a football pass, slay the dragon or free a princess seems like kid stuff.

Except that in a world of bombs, mortar attacks and other weaponry that every day threaten the lives of countless American soldiers, the Nintendo Wii and like devices could be just what the doctor ordered.
